Eugene Field Park Hills

The Eugene Fields Elementary School was built in 1907 and in 2006, it was brought back to full use as housing for the St. Francois County senior citizens.

“To see a building like this that’s almost a century old be reborn in the 21st Century as senior housing is a delight and pleasure,” Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said. “The Commissioners and staff of MHDC want to find a use for buildings  that have historical value if they’re not too far gone. Historical preservation is one of our mandates.”

Wallace Architects worked with numerous consultants to get the school house on the National Register of Historic Places, develop conceptual layouts from original classrooms to apartments and design a 4-story new construction addition on the rear of the school house. The 1 and 2-bedroom apartments have numerous amenities including an elevator, security system, hardwood floors, an exercise room and large gathering room for the residents.
